About
I am a freelance writer and photographer. Based in Thailand since 1997, I currently live in Bangkok but previously spent six years in the northern city of Chiang Mai.
I travel extensively throughout Asia conducting research for articles and taking photographs for local and international newspapers and magazines.
My three most recent books were commissioned by John Beaufoy Publishing in the UK as part of the ‘Enchanting Asia’ series. ’Enchanting Thailand’, ‘Enchanting Laos’ and ‘Enchanting Cambodia’ each include 190 images accompanied by an introductory text with an overview of the history, geography, culture, festivals, food and so on. The second section is of images with extended captions. I am currently working on ‘Enchanting Myanmar’.
I am also the author of ‘The Traditional Ceramics of South East Asia’, published by the University of Hawaii Press and A&C Black. Considered an authority on the subject, this beautifully illustrated book includes over 200 photographs and comprehensively documents the life and work of craftsmen in Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. As an important record of traditional craftsmanship and a fast-disappearing way of life, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in the anthropology and sociology of South East Asia. The book can be purchased through www.amazon.com
I am a contributing writer to the books ‘To Asia with Love’, ‘To Myanmar with Love’ and the forthcoming ‘To Thailand with Love’, published by Things Asian Press. I updated DK Eye Witness Guides to Thailand and Bangkok, and Sherman Travel Guide to Laos. My work has also appeared in numerous in-flight magazines, the Bangkok Post, and the Australian Sunday Telegraph. Corporate clients include Leo Burnett, Thai Airways, Tourist Authority of Thailand, Northstar Travel Media, Accor, and Starwood Hotels & Resorts. I have also interviewed and photographed the musicians Jimmy Cliff, Kenny Garrett, Larry Carlton, Billy Cobham, and many more.
A keen biker, I spend my spare time motorcycling and have toured extensively on and off-road in northern Thailand and Laos.
